L’Épopée (The Epic) documents 100 years of social struggles in Liège through the FGTB (The Liège section of the main Belgian Labor Union). The book is constructed in chronological chapters, with timelines and thematic inserts highlighting important trades. The seemingly classic layout is nevertheless dynamic: iconography, titles and footnotes chase and punctuate the main text relentlessly.
Thanks to the extensive research carried out by IHOES (Institut d’histoire ouvrière, économique et sociale), the book is abundantly illustrated with historical photography and documents. Despite this, we realised that images became increasingly scarce from the 1980s onwards. To avoid iconography cease midway through the book, we commissioned a series of contemporary worker portraits from Charles Paulicevich, which can be found at the beginning and end of the book.

The overall design of the book is deliberately rough, with all the elements of its construction visible: The red stitching is visible on the spine, the cover and book-block are straight-cut, the covers are screen-printed directly on raw cardboard, displaying a drawing by François Schuiten.
